Eliza Sanders
Our Mother
Died October 27, 1923
Age 100 years
AT REST

Mothers find their children irresistible.
Children find their mothers even more so.
Families get torn apart.
But mothers always love.
This was a gravestone found in a cemetery in Auburn, Alabama. As I cannot remember the name of the cemetery, I shall tell you about it. It was the oldest traditionally African American cemeteries in Auburn, and bodies from the early 1800s can be found buried there. The graves were not very well taken care of, or visited by people, although some were. The entire place was infested in ants, and some graves were broken open and rained in. This one seemed to be taken care of, although it hadn't been visited in a long while. My friends and I believe that a child made this headstone, and a young one at that. Because of that, we believe the "100 years old" may be an exaggeration (because young children seem to always think their parents are older than they are). Beside Eliza Sander's grave is an unmarked grave we can only assume is a father, or the children.

I leave this poem in her memory.

Picture taken by my friend Morgan. Poem written by myself.
